Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants are part of the home care therapy team that helps older adults, their families, and caregivers. Their critical role is to assess, train, and support patients so that they can remain independent while safely living in their homes. They evaluate and manage personal and household risks and adapt activities to support the patient’s ability to engage in meaningful activities. Additionally, they help patients, family members, and caregivers to identify and avoid the risk of falls in the home, which can include identifying hazards like stairs in need of repair or poor lighting.

Occupational therapists also help older patients to overcome their fear of falling, which can be due to previous falls, lack of confidence, or psychological and social factors. Overcoming the fear of falling can limit the patient’s desire or ability to stay active and eventually lead to weakness and decreased stamina.

Occupational therapists also address issues related to:

  • Workers’ Compensation Cases
  • Dressing
  • Eating
  • In-Home Safety
  • Transfer Techniques
  • Upper Body Strengthening
  • Improving Motor Skills
  • Utilizing Various Equipment, including Prosthetic and Orthotic Services

Fall prevention and overcoming the fear of falling are cost-effective treatments that can reduce healthcare costs and improve the patient’s quality of life.
